Project Overview

This project is a scenario-based eLearning module designed to improve driver safety awareness in roadway work zones. Developed using Articulate Storyline 360, the training simulates real-world driving environments where learners must identify hazards and make safe driving decisions.

The goal is to strengthen situational awareness and reduce preventable incidents by encouraging active decision-making rather than passive learning.

Needs Analysis (Problem)

Roadway work zones are high-risk environments where driver attention and decision-making directly impact safety outcomes for both workers and road users.

In many organizations, safety training is primarily delivered through passive formats such as presentations or videos. While informative, these methods do not allow learners to practice real-time hazard recognition or decision-making.

Current State:

  • Safety training is mostly passive and informational
  • Limited opportunities to practice real-world driving decisions
  • Low engagement and retention of hazard awareness concepts

Desired State:

  • Drivers actively recognize hazards in dynamic environments
  • Improved situational awareness in work zones
  • Safer, more confident driving behaviors under changing conditions

Gap:

There is a lack of interactive, decision-based training that replicates real-world driving conditions.

Impact:

  • Increased risk of accidents in work zones
  • Potential harm to drivers, road crews, and pedestrians
  • Operational and financial consequences for organizations

This gap highlights the need for an interactive, scenario-based learning solution that allows learners to safely practice decision-making

Solution(Design and Development Approach)

To address this gap, a scenario-based learning module was designed using Articulate Storyline 360. The experience places learners in realistic driving situations where they must identify hazards and respond appropriately.

The design focuses on active learning through decision-making and consequence-based feedback.

Key Design Features:

  • Interactive hotspot activities to identify visible and hidden hazards
  • Branching scenarios that simulate real driving decisions and consequences
  • Layered feedback to reinforce safe or unsafe choices
  • Real-time decision prompts to simulate driving pressure situations
  • Visual design elements created in Canva for consistency and clarity

Instructional Rationale:

Storyline was selected because it enables interactive, non-linear learning experiences that closely simulate real-world decision-making—something not achievable through static or linear content formats

Outcome and Impact

The final product is a compact, SCORM-compliant module suitable for LMS deployment or standalone web use. While concise, it delivers a high-impact experience designed to improve safety behavior and reduce preventable incidents in work zones.

This module demonstrates how scenario-based learning can transform traditional safety training into an active, decision-driven experience.

By requiring learners to actively identify hazards and make choices in simulated environments, the training strengthens situational awareness and reinforces safer driving behaviors.

While this is a simulated portfolio project, it reflects real-world transportation safety challenges and demonstrates how instructional design can be used to support behavior change and risk reduction.

Effectiveness would be measured through:

  • Learner decision accuracy within scenarios
  • Engagement and completion rates
  • Post-training confidence in hazard recognition
